The Dank Crypt serves as one of the first major dungeons players can explore upon surviving the Nautiloid crash in Baldur's Gate 3. Located within the Overgrown Ruins along the coastline, this ancient burial site holds crucial early-game loot and key story encounters. Navigating its underground halls allows new adventurers to test their combat skills and gather essential equipment before venturing further into the wilderness.
Finding the Entrances to the Overgrown Ruins
Players can gain access to the underground crypt through four distinct entry points depending on their party approach. Options range from lockpicking a hidden wooden hatch down the chapel path to using force on the heavy doors at the main entrance. Alternatively, shooting down a suspended stone block outside creates a hole directly into the refectory area below.
Choosing the hidden wooden hatch provides the most direct route to the central chamber without unnecessary confrontations. Recruiting a full party of companions before entering makes managing any unexpected threats significantly easier.
Surviving the Sarcophagus Room Traps
The main chamber contains an ornate sarcophagus loaded with valuable treasures, including the Engraved Key and The Watcher's Guide spear. Opening this central container immediately triggers oil vents and fire jets across the room. To prevent a devastating explosion, players can disarm the traps beforehand using specialized toolkits or by dragging heavy pots onto the floor vents.
If the traps trigger, pressing a hidden button on the pillar disarms the mechanism instantly. Using turn-based mode helps party members react swiftly to avoid taking severe fire damage.
Defeating the Entombed Scribes
Deeper within the crypt lies a grand statue room where several ancient scribes rest as dormant skeletons. Activating the secret button behind the statue opens a hidden alcove while simultaneously reviving these undead foes. A clever strategy is to loot all the weapons and armor off the skeletons before triggering the battle.
Depriving the undead scribes of their equipment forces them into harmless melee combat, rendering their offensive turns ineffective. Positioning your party advantageously allows for a swift cleanup of the remaining enemies.
Unlocking Withers and Key Early Rewards
Defeating the scribes grants access to a secret chamber containing a heavy chest and a large stone sarcophagus. Opening the final resting place reveals Withers, an enigmatic undead NPC who joins your camp after a short dialogue. He offers essential camp services later in the campaign, such as character respecs and companion resurrections.
Do not forget to loot the surrounding containers before exiting the dungeon completely. Inside the nearby chest, players can collect The Amulet of Lost Voices, which grants the ability to cast Speak with Dead at will.
